Since Dress Rehearsal is the week after Turkey Day, here is a little article about prepping for a show

Also, if you are wondering what all the commotion about styles is and why I don't buy into it, here is a video from Suhailia, who's mom invented Tribal.  Sums up my feelings pretty well

Swap and Shop this weekend!!

  • Sunday, November 6 at 7:30 PM - 9 PM

  • 1181 Keeneland Dr, Watkinsville, GA 30677, United States

  • Hey all! This is a low key evening as an opportunity for all of us to hang out before the show and just enjoy each other. You can bring a drink or snack to share if you wish.

We're combining it with a swap and sell. For those who have never participated in one, this is an opportunity for people who craft or for those of us with costumes and accessories that are no longer needed to come together and either sell or trade with others. Of course you can come just for the enjoyment or just to shop as well :-) This is a great opportunity to supplement your show costume or just add to your own collection.
If you have costume pieces to sell bring them tagged and priced (tags here  If you have stuff to sell, but can't make it, bring them to class this week and I will be glad to try to sell them.  Bring cash or checks to buy stuff, we are not equipped for cards :)
Also, if you want to perform in the show, EMAIL ME at to reserve your spot.

I just got back from 4 dance filled days and nights at Essence of Bellydance 6 in Atlanta.  Weekend events like this one are so important to me because it is often the only instruction with a live teacher I can work into my schedule.  These events give me a chance to study with teachers I know and discover some wonderful ones.  Also, the videos below will give you an idea of who I will be excitedly babbling about.

This year at Essence, most of the tangible learning I can show you is from the fusion side.  The three oriental/cabaret dancers were all Egyptian style and that is sometimes harder to find on video and take notes on to bring back to class.

Here are some recent videos from these instructors

Silvia Salimanca was a jewel I discovered last weekend.  She is an excellent teacher and dancer and I wanted to bring her back to Athens with me!  The first example is her Spanish fusion and the second is Indian fusion with sword(s).  Her back ground is ballet, flamenco and modern dance.  The belly dance and Indian dance she began studying as an adult.

Second is Unmata, I love these ladies and have taken about 8 workshops with them over the years.  Their ITS improve style is my favorite format and their choreography is always creative.  Amy Sigil comes from an athletic/team sports background and she did a workshop on troupe dynamics, trust and risk taking that still has my head and emotions spinning.  This video starts of with Amy and Kari dancing with people who they don't normally dance with, but because they all know the same format it works.  The second part is one of their recent creations

I have always loved Ranya Renee and although she has always done Egyptian style dance, right now she is mostly doing dance inspired by the Golden Age of bellydance in the 50's and 60's in Egypt.  Very melty, ooey - gooey

Finally is Ebony from Washington, DC.  She did cheerleading and drill team as a kid, discovered bellydance while in college and found that it started creeping in to her dancing at clubs and raves.  So, she blended it all together into what has become her signature style

Practice Videos (also known as the evolution of my hairstyles) - music links are in previous post.  Both of these go past where we are in class, but I want you to see where we are headed with it.

This is not technically bellydance, but is a beautiful documentary about how the folk dances we learn embody the culture of the people.  Colleena will be performing in Atlanta in May (Google Atlanta Fusion Belly Dance for details)
