How to choose music

At the Healing Arts Centre this summer, we are working how to create a choreography.  Even if you aren't taking the class, you may find this useful.  Just think, you can start working on your dance for fall semester now!

Often, the hardest part of creating a dance is choosing the music.  The easy answer is to pick something you like but in reality, it doesn't work that way.  Some points to consider:
  • Length - is there a maximum length?  Or is there a length you are more comfortable with?  Remember that it takes a very good dancer to keep a crowd's attention for more than 3 or 4 minutes.
  • What style are you looking for? You can often find multiple versions of older songs that each have a different feel
    • Traditional (could be a full classic orchestra sound, a simple more rustic sound, or folkloric)
    • Tribal (traditional sounding or folkloric)
    • Pop (could be run of the mill pop or shaabi)
  • What feeling do you want  your dance to have?  Soft and fluid, sharp with lots of accents, a full orchestra, the simplicity of just a few instruments?  Are there props you want to incorporate?
  • Variation and Repetition - Do you want a song with lots of repetition?  What about a mix of slow and fast or different rhythms?
If I can't choose at first, I narrow it down to 2 or 3 songs and listen to them repeatedly.  If one still does not jump out at me, I start dancing to them and see which one feels more natural.

Homework - 2 things
1.  Start listening to Middle Eastern music.  Find 2 minutes or more of a song you like to work with this summer.  Try to have it narrowed down by the end of May.
2.  Browse YouTube and email me the link to one clip of bellydance that inspires you.  Jot a sentence about why this one grabbed your attention.  It can be to any music and any style - just pay attention to what moves you.

Black Orchid Danse - Memorial Day Weekend- http://www.blackorchiddanse.com/
Huge workshop, awesome instructor.  Three of my favorite dancers/teachers will be there.  Tito Seif is coming back - beautiful flowing oriental style and he enjoys dancing and it shows.  He's just wow!  He's teaching Shaabi (street music), Oriental (traditional staged cabaret), and Baladi/drum solo combo.  Sharon Kihara is teaching her own funky fusion, she draws heavily from yoga, and is a joy to watch.  Tarik Sultan is Morocco's protege', does some cool combos and choreography that even beginners could learn from.  He's also teaching zills and is hands down the best zill class I have ever had.  If you want to learn to play, this workshop is a great place to start.  He's also teaching a drum solo and how to dance on top of a tabla (drum).

July / August 2011 (TBA) Mahmoud Reda U.S. Tour
*Amani Jabril will host Mr. Reda in Atlanta, Georgia more details to come.
Reda has done more to shape the world of staged belly dance that any other.  He took it from being a party dance and elevated to an international stage.  His dance is known for his complicated footwork and attention to detail.  http://amanijabril.com/?page_id=33
Suhalia in Atlanta - September 17-18 http://www.atlantafusionbellydance.com/Suhaila_workshop.html
She's a second generation belly dancer and has broken this dance down with anatomical precision.  Her technique is used by many top dancers today and the physical conditioning her technique uses is unbelievable.  She is the queen of the glute squeezes and her workshops will definitely work you - you will be exhausted but full of energy after a day with her.  She's also a wealth of information about the dance, it's history and living as a dancer in the middle east.

Dramatic Spins & Turns Workshop-with Teejei of Awalim

Dramatic Spins & Turns
Prepare to express yourself with this electrifying workshop. First, we explore a  selection of slow combination turns from the ATS repertoire: Aesthetic, intent, and timing. Then we rev it up and tackle the exhilaration of spinning, starting with the vital techniques for success and ending with elegant flight! This class is appropriate
for both ATS and fusion style students.   At least 6 weeks of bellydance experience recommended.
Saturday, February 12th, 3:00-5:00 pm
$25 in advance by Feb. 8th
$30 after Feb 8th. Workshop space is limited!!!

About Teejei Amala
Teejei discovered bellydance through the videos of Fat Chance Bellydance in 2004, and self-trained till she could grab the nearest class. She joined Awalim in 2006, and continues her study of movement and music through workshops and research. She is proud to have earned her FCBD General Skills Certification in 2007, and her FCBD Teacher Training certification in 2010.  Teejei is also an artistic anatomist, and marries this knowledge of the human systems into her technique. She is also rabid Middle Eastern and Eastern European percussionist. She promotes basic knowledge of percussion as part of a dancer’s study in a workshop, “Drumming for Dancers.” Her dance and movement workshops are revolutionary in that instructional modules can be combined to create custom instruction ranging from traditional to progressive, from beginner through many shades of expertise.

More upcoming workshops!

Tons of workshops coming our way in Georgia this year.

Why should you go to one of these?? If you are beyond a baby beginner, workshops are a great way to improve your technique, learn new combinations and ways of doing things.  It's also good to be influenced by more than just your teachers.

If you are interested in one or more of these and have questions or want to know what to expect, just ask!

Christy Fricks may also be bringing someone to town this spring and may also be having a show Valentines weekend.  I will post info as soon as I get it.  However, if she does either I highly recommend you take advantage of it.  We are lucky to get events locally and need to be supportive of them.

Saturday, January 15, 2011Diana of Company Mezza will teach a 2-hr workshop designed specifically for those who want to cross over from beginning into basic intermediate level. Material will cover basic layering of movements, basic traveling moves and turns, and basic transitions from one step to the other to set the framework for putting your own routine together and dancing like a pro. Learning these basics will prepare you to excel in any intermediate class.
